Low carbohydrate diet with no calorie restriction was shown to be the most effective in contributing to weight loss compared to Low fat – restricted calorie and Mediterranean – restricted calorie according to a 2 year study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in July 2008.
In the study of 300 moderately obese individuals the study group that followed a Low carb diet lost over 10 lbs, 40% more than the Low Fat diet and slightly more than the Mediterranean diet which consumed the highest amount of dietary fiber and highest ratio of healthy monounsaturated fat. The Low carb diet group consumed the least amount of carbohydrates and the largest amounts of fat, protein and cholesterol.
Also the relative reduction in the ratio of total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein (HDL, good cholesterol) cholesterol was highest at 20% in the low-carbohydrate group and 12% in the low-fat group.
